Our primary objective is to enjoy the thrill of racehorse ownership whilst minimising the financial risk. We have a passion for racing which we would like to share with like minded people. Our horses are carefully selected by Dr Bridget Drew and leading trainers on their pedigree, conformation and athletic ability. This should give members the best chance of combining success on the racetrack with a reasonable return when the horse comes out of training.
How do we work?
We usually purchase well bred, yearling fillies although some carefully selected home bred colts are retained and, occasionally, winning two year olds are purchased. Each horse is put into a separate syndicate and each syndicate is divided into eight equal shares. In some cases a number of half shares are available (a 1/16th) but these are strictly limited. John and Bridget Drew always retain at least two shares in each syndicate.
The horses are kept at Larksborough Farm when not in training to reduce the annual charge. Most of the horses are trained by Clive Cox, Andrew Balding and Ralph Beckett. Members are welcome to visit the horses at Larksborough and to come with me to see them work on the gallops.
The initial payment covers the purchase costs and 50% of the estimated training fees for the first year. The second 50% of the estimated costs are paid six months later. At the end of the first year the accounts are prepared and the fees for the second year are adjusted for extraordinary costs and prize money won. Fees for the second year are also due in two equal instalments.
At the end of the second year members can decide whether they want the horse to continue in training for a further year or sell their share. If the horse is sold, the selling price is added to the balance of money remaining and distributed between the members. If the horse is retained but some members wish to sell their share, it is valued by two independent agents so members wishing to leave can be paid out.
Why choose us?
- Exclusivity and enjoyment - the syndicates contain so more than 12 invited members and owner's badges are always available when the horse runs.
- Ownership involvement- the members actually own a share in the horse (except horses leased) so can benefit from the re-sale value if the horse or the relatives do well. Profit on race horses is tax free.
- The syndicates represent real value for money - no commission on purchase or sale, no agent's fees, VAT returns and accounts completed in house.
- Regular updates and stable visits.
- The capital is protected by mortality insurance is included in the annual charge.
- High success rates. In nine years of racing we have achieved over 12% winners to runners and over 49% placed. Our most successful purchased horses are Secret Night and Perfect Star. These were purchased for £20k and £25k and both are now worth over £60k as brood mares. Perfect Star won £86k and five races and Secret Night £73k and four races. Our most successful homebred is Perfect Tribute who was sold into her syndicate for £25k. She has not only won a Group 3 and a Listed race but holds the course record at Ascot over 6 furlongs and the course record at Lingfield over 7 furlongs.
